The artwork is named after the infamous Wu Zetian, the de facto ruler of the Tang dynasty in China from 665 to 705. Wu Zetian was a groundbreaking figure in Chinese history, being the only female sovereign widely regarded as legitimate. Under her reign, China experienced significant growth and revitalization.
Damien Hirst’s highlight of Wu Zetian and other great female leaders in his Empress series is breathtaking.
