Today, March 9th, we celebrate the birthday of David Smith, an American abstract expressionist, sculptor and painter. Smith’s most influential works were crafted from welded steel and highlighted his vast draftsman skill set. Smith's metal sculptures and painted geometric forms allowed him to become the most original American sculptor in the decades after World War II.
This work, “Hudson River Landscape” even though abstracted, is still recognizable. In the artist’s words, the piece “came in part from dozens of drawings made on a train between Albany and Poughkeepsie, a synthesis of ten trips over a 75 mile stretch.”
Happy birthday David Smith!
